Development of Horticulture under the World Bank, watershed Program

During the watershed development program, a special awareness and training session was organized for farmers with a focus on Mango and Sapota cultivation. The main aim of this program was to promote fruit crop farming as a sustainable livelihood option for small and marginal farmers. Farmers were educated in detail on the proper methods of pit digging, preparation of soil mixture, and application of organic manure to ensure healthy root development of the plants. They were also guided on staking techniques to protect young saplings from wind damage and to support their upright growth.

The training emphasized the importance of applying manure and fertilizers at the right stage, as well as the use of eco-friendly practices for pest and disease control. Farmers were also made aware of regular plant care activities such as timely watering, mulching for moisture conservation, and pruning to enhance yield. Practical demonstrations were provided so that farmers could easily adopt these methods in their own fields.

Through this program, a total of 360 farmers from 8 villages across 2 taluks participated and benefitted. The knowledge imparted during the training is expected to encourage farmers to take up fruit cultivation in a more scientific and systematic manner, thereby improving their income levels and ensuring long-term sustainability. The initiative not only enhanced technical awareness but also motivated the farming community towards adopting horticulture as a supplementary source of livelihood
